On this day (September 4) in 1864, two-riots occurred in the city of Mobile, Alabama that have since been dubbed the bread riots. The entire issue that lead to these riots was due to a severe lack of needed resources like basic clothes, hygiene essentials, and baseline food items like bread.
The first riot was assembled amongst the women within the town as they needed items to ensure their children and themselves would not die from starvation. After the mob first assembled, the Mayor was able to calm the nerves of the mob by making unkempt promises. But that calm soon subsided as the entire town now joined forces and began taking any and all resources the town officials we holding off for themselves. A military regimen of Alabama was called to stop the angry women with force but the men called in instantly began helping the women as it was clear as day that they were starving and slowly dying. Ultimately city officials learned their lesson as a small skirmish ensued when a different military regimen was called in and were quickly defeated.
If there’s anything we can learn from this it’s that we all just want basic essentials in life like bread, water, and some clothes. Speaking of clothes, you can get custom t-shirts from us through our website!
